Re: Our midfield

If we compare our midfield 3 ( obiang, noble, Fernandes) with, for the sake of argument, the worst midfield 3 in the premier league swansea's 3 of Britton, fer and Carroll. Even with my c nad b specs, I am not sure our lot are any better Much work to be done

Re: Our midfield

Our midfield is shit currently but will get massively better if young Declan Rice gets a decent chance and we sign Carvalho (going by his reputation and You Tube only).
Then we need Lanzini fit and the rest can get splinters on their bums...

Puzzled by Arnautovic's performance.
Free-kicks apart, one of the better ones on Sunday.
But the free-kicks were ridiculously bad.

Re: Our midfield

I agree with the last few posters about the 3 AMs being Antonio, Lanzini and Arnie. I expect we'll often see one of them (probably Arnie most often) being subbed for Sakho or Carroll when we're chasing a game or comfortably ahead (ahem!). If one of those 3 is unavailable there's Ayew, who I hope will be nowhere near our starting 11 if everyone is fit. The same goes for Fernandes, who is very unconvincing.
As for the DMs, there will be a huge amount of competition for a couple of places if Carvalho arrives, though there seem to be one or two noises coming from Portugal that we're turning our attention elsewhere. At the moment it's between Noble, Obiang and Kouyate, with Rice knocking at the door. I am convinced that Rice is going to be a top, top player and will very quickly make himself undroppable, which will make it interesting for the other, more established players. I think Noble still gets in ahead of Obiang and Kouyate but I can see him being less and less involved this season.

The midfield has long been our problem area due to the ineffectiveness of the incumbents
Got found out massively at OT

I'd give Kouyate a chance to partner WC, certainly in the games not against the top six as he offers more going forward than Obiang.
Obiang probably better suited to 'harder' games?

I don't think that we are particularly going to play with wingers this season. I think that we will play a back four in front of which we will have 2 DMs, Lanzini and Antonio and Arnautovic supporting Pea. The full backs will push on and that will still leave a block of 4 to defend on the break.

kd, I just can't see bilic going two up top. the thing with Obiang is he's played wide for previous clubs and with him comfortable with his left foot can feed Arnie & Cresswell from that position likewise Lanzini to Antonio. getting Cresswellbaco in the team is key for me as that the gives Arnie more license to cut inside, what's noticeable with Arnie is he's not going to offs much coverage for our left back so that makes Obiang even more valuable when not in possession

Re: Our midfield

It's in games where we're up against battering ram players who are going to whack us at set pieces, that's where a midfield of Obiang, Kouyate and Carvalho looks appealing. Actually if you want to batter another opponent with set-pieces the same might be true.
It's a bit of the 'good player in a bad team' mentality. If we're going to be a bad team this season then shoving in the big lads just for their size starts to make more sense. Hope it doesn't come to that.

For any team to do well they need to sort out the defence first.

I've always felt that having Lanzini in the centre pulling the strings was the best way to go, personally.
But if Snodgrass leaves, then we're struggling for wingers (which is ironic as we were probably overloaded with them not so long ago) so I could understand him filling in there if need be.

In the tough games I think that's a consideration, but breaking the club record on a left wing changes that a bit. For me, the whole idea of spending big on Carvalho is to give more license to creative players in the middle of the park - hope it works out that way.

You would like to think that in home games and 'winnable' games against the also rans we could be more OFFENSIVE and not have two DMs.
